Date: May 2007 Good news for those students who are interested in a real field biology course. "Vertebrate Evolution and Ecology" (ZOO 4310c) has just been expanded to 48 students for the Fall 2008 semester. This is double the original enrollment and gives 24 additional students the opportunity to experience this course which is normally offered once every two years. ZOO 4310c counts as a Biology upper division restricted elective under the Systematic category. It also gives a student valuable field experience through the laboratory portion. This is the catalogue description: ZOO 4310C COS-BIOL 4(2,6) Vertebrate Evolution & Ecology: PR: BSC 2010C, BSC 2011C, PCB 3044, PCB 3063 or C.I. Vertebrate evolution and ecology, based on the paleontological and ecological literature. The laboratory places heavy emphasis on classification/identification and field work. Occasional. M&S fee: $45.00
Date: January 2008 Students planing on graduating in Spring 2008 or Summer 2008 must take the ETS exam during the spring semester. The exam will be held on Friday February 29th at 11:30 AM in BL 304 and on Saturday, March 1st at 11:30 AM in BL 209. You must sign up for the ETS exam at the Biology Office (BL301) by February 14th to be eligible to take the exam. Students must take the ETS and earn a passing score to graduate. Date: February 2007 Although a passing grade was not required during previous semesters, it has become necessary to require a passing grade on the Biology Exit Exam for graduation. This will go into effect for the Spring 2007/Summer 2007 graduating class. The passing grade will be determined by the undergraduate program coordinator upon evaluating the exit exam scores. You should not need to study for the exit exam. It is a comprehensive exam much like the GRE Subject Test and will evaluate your understanding of the Biology core curriculum. At this point in your education, if you take each question seriously and take the time to read each question, you should be able to determine the correct answer.
Date: February 2007 Multi-Term registration has changed. These changes will go into effect for the upcoming (March 2007) registration period. Only a few students will be eligible register for all three semesters this March. These students will be special case students (such as Honors, handicapped, and Athletics) and students having a 3.5 UCF GPA or better. These select students can register for Su07, F07, and Sp08. All other students (including new or transfer students who do not have a UCF GPA) will register for Su07 and F07 during the spring registration period. They will be given a second registration appointment in the fall to register for Sp08 classes. However, everyone will be able to view the course offerings for all three semesters beginning in March. This will allow for effective planning for the entire academic year. This revised Multiple Term Registration will benefit our students because they will have a better feel for what they will need by delaying registration until Spring 08, yet classes will still be open. Date: August 2005
Biology students are able to take either the PHY 2048-2049 or PHY 2053-2054 sequence to meet their physics core requirement. There is an assumption that preprofessional students (i.e.; premed, predent, prevet, etc.) must take the PHY 2048-2049 sequence. That is no longer true. Professional schools are now accepting students with the PHY 2053-2054 sequence. Your choice of a physics sequence should be based on your competency in math and aptitude for physics. Date: August 2005
The Department of Biology is now accepting Human Anatomy (ZOO 3733) and Human Physiology (PCB 3703) as Upper Division Restricted Electives in the major. Both are good courses for the preparation of our preprofessional students. When combined with Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (ZOO 3713) and Animal Physiology (PCB 4723) a preprofessional student should have an excellent foundation upon which to enter into any health professional program. Please remember to be careful to select Upper Division Restricted Electives in the major so that at least 10 hours come from the Department of Biology. That is a requirement for graduation. Date: August 2005
The Department of Biology has added another upper division restricted elective to our spring 2006 course offerings. The course is Entomology, ENY 4004 and will be offered wednesdays and fridays 11:30-12:20 for lecture and 12:30-3;20 for lab. It is a 4 credit course and is one of the Systematic category of upper division restricted electives. |
