UCF Bug Closet The UCF "Bug Closet" (properly the University of Central Florida Collection of Arthropods) is recognized as one of the important arthropod collections in the United States. Many years of hard work and support by Mr. Stuart Fullerton, Research Associate, and students both past and current who work in the Bug Closet continue to contribute to a teaching/research collection that is invaluable to the scientific community. Many universities, museums, private research organizations, and individual researchers from around the world take advantage of this important collection. For example, the Bug Closet was recently visited by two world-renowned entomologists, Dr. David Wahl, Director of the American Entomological Institute, and Dr. Ian Gauld, President of the American Entomological Institute and researcher at The Natural History Museum, London. They came to UCF to borrow specific collections of the family Ichneumonidae, subfamily Ophioninae (a type of rather large and laterally flattened wasps) that are housed in our museum. Those collections are very high quality and they represent long-term (several decades) consistent collections with large numbers of replicate specimens that allow for a range of comparisons that can lead to identification of new records and species. Most of the specimens that were loaned are regional Florida collections. |
