Page 9: The Impact of Watergate: A 30-Year Retrospective
Presented by the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government at the University of Central Florida

March 29 - 30, 2004 at the University of Central Florida Student Union. All events are free and open to the public. For a schedule of events, driving directions, or to pre-register, visit: www.loufrey.org

On the thirtieth anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s impending impeachment and eventual resignation, the Lou Frey Institute will host a symposium about the history, implications, and politics surrounding Watergate. Among the featured speakers are Bob Woodward (noted author and one of the two reporters from The Washington Post whose investigative reporting eventually led to President Nixon’s resignation), Senator Lowell Weicker (who was a member of the Senate committee that investigated the Watergate affair), Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman (who was a member of the 1974 House Judiciary Committee that voted to impeach President Nixon), Congressman Tom Railsback (who drafted the Articles of Impeachment against President Nixon), Professor David Rohde (Distinguished University Professor at Michigan State University and an expert in Congressional reform in the wake of Watergate), John Taylor (director of the Nixon Presidential Library and Birthplace), and Congressman Lou Frey, Jr., himself. Congressman Frey was part of the political leadership at the time of Watergate.

In a similar event this fall, Sichan Siv, a United Nations Ambassador, and Volkmar Schultz, a retired member of the Bundestag (the German Legislature), presented the keynote addresses about the tension between the U.S. and the U.N.

These political forums attract Congresspersons, political analysts, and local, state, and national pundits. They are made possible by a new institute, housed in the Department of Political Science: The Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government. The Institute was created in 2001 when the Honorable Lou Frey, Jr. donated his support and congressional papers to the University. Congressman Frey brought a plan for the institute, too. It is designed to be a non-partisan organization that engages in civic education for college and high school students, and members of the Central Florida community. The Institute promotes informed discussion of issues from diverse viewpoints, encourages participation in the political process, and supports research on politics and policy.

“The Frey Institute, in a short time, has become one of the preeminent political college think-tanks in the country.” — Congressman Lou Frey, Jr.

Why is the Lou Frey Institute unique?
LOU FREY, JR: The Frey Institute, in a short time, has become one of the preeminent political college think-tanks in the country. Interesting and timely topics, coupled with an incredible array of speakers from the political and academic world, have gained it recognition throughout this country and overseas. The Institute reaches out to college and high school students, gives scholarships, provides lesson plans for teachers through edited tapes of the session, and does it all in a civil and thoughtful manner. The energy and drive of the board of directors and the University of Central Florida political science department has proved to be an unbeatable combination.

Why discuss Watergate at the spring symposium?
LOU FREY, JR: 2004 will be the 30th anniversary of the Watergate and President Nixon’s eventual resignation. Watergate paralyzed our country during 1973 and 1974. The ’74 elections were a disaster for the Republicans with over 70 new Democrats, called “the Watergate babies,” joining the House of Representatives. The impact of Watergate has continued throughout the years in both the legislative and political area.
