Page 1: Dean's Welcome
A Few Words from Dean Kathryn Seidel
Determination. Innovation. Confidence. Integrity. We need these qualities in our leaders, in our companies, in our schools, and in ourselves. At UCF the College of Arts and Sciences is committed to fostering these qualities. We value tradition, but as the largest college in a new university, CAS also gets the chance to invent and reinvent what we do as a university. UCF has 42,000 students and will have 45,000 in the fall. We are among the ten largest universities in the nation.
Surprised? We position ourselves as a research university in touch with the greater central Florida region of 1.8 million.
Surprised? Our average SAT score is 1176.
Surprised? We have nationally regarded programs in forensic chemistry, human factors psychology, and up and coming programs in entertainment technologies, digital media, film, and theatre.
Surprised? We had our first Rhodes scholar last year, and he was anEnglish major.
Surprised? Miss America Ericka Dunlap is an Advertising/Public Relations major in CAS.
As the largest college here, we house the traditional disciplines in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Each is transformed by the new technologies, a commitment to diversity, an international dimension, and a quest for excellence. Yes, we are big, but we are developing programs of the highest quality. It is a quest and a calling to the best and the brightest students and faculty to join us. In this magazine, you will read about the faculty and students who are remaking the idea of a university. You will see the successes of a diverse group dedicated to educating, learning, performing, and serving. Becoming America’s leading metropolitan university is our quest. We’re pleased to share our progress....
