ORLANDO, August 2005 -- The University of Central Florida's Department of Music is hosting an all-state preparation clinic on Saturday, August 27. This one-day workshop will help prepare middle and high school students for the Florida Bandmasters' Association 2006 all-state audition, which will take place in September. The workshop will also feature motivational speaker, Fran Kick. The workshop will be held from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Visual Arts Building on the UCF main campus. It is free and open to all middle and high school students, as well as their band directors.

The preparation workshop will be lead by UCF Music faculty and guest instrumentalists. The curriculum will emphasize all-state exercise preparation, including tone production, technique development, scales, sight-reading strategies, and audition readiness. Students will be divided into three groups, according to their grade level: middle school, freshmen/sophomore, and junior/senior.

Motivational speaker Fran Kick will talk to each group about music performance. Kick, an educational consultant, author and certified speaking professional, is the creator of KICK IT IN, a series of self-motivational personal leadership presentations and materials. At the workshop, his inspirational sessions will be geared toward each of the three age groups.

The Florida Bandmasters' Association all-state program is part of the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) annual conference, which is held at the Tampa convention center every January. Each year, students from around the state audition to participate in the conference's all-state ensembles. The students who are selected to participate are considered the finest young musicians in the state.

For the workshop, students should bring their instruments and all-state sheet music, and they should be prepared to play. Registration for 7th and 8th graders begins at 9:00 AM, and their workshop ends at noon. Registration for 9th through 12th graders begins at 10:30 AM, and their workshop ends at 4:00 PM.
