
UCF Broadcasting Students Win First Place in State University Competition
ORLANDO, June 3, 2005 -- University of Central Florida radio-television majors won first place this spring in both the radio and television newscast categories of a college contest held by the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters. UCF won first place in the newscast categories for the first time in the seven years of the competition.
James Flaskamp and John Wheaton shared the first-place award for their radio newscast, which aired on WGKB radio (Golden Knights Broadcasting) in the fall. Shawn Holt and Angelica Mayen-Fudaz shared the first-place award for their television newscast, which aired live on campus and tape-delayed on Bright House Networks' Public Access Channel 10 during the fall. Selina Tolonen won second place for her radio feature report on "Gay Marriages," which also aired last fall.
The 2005 Florida Associated Press Broadcasters College Contest is designed to recognize Florida students and broadcast stations for outstanding college broadcast journalism. The organization represents the state's television and radio broadcasters who are AP members. Awards were presented April 30 during a luncheon at the Universal Orlando Royal Pacific Resort.
Other Florida universities and colleges participating in the contest included the universities of Florida, Miami and South Florida, Florida A & M University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville University and Flagler College.
The Nicholson School of Communication faculty advisor for the radio newscast was Michelle Betz. The faculty advisors for the television newscast were Lisa Mills and Jose Maunez-Cuadra.
