Nicholson School Director to Host AEJMC Convention
ORLANDO, July 22, 2005 -- Professor Mary Alice Shaver, director of the Nicholson School of Communication at UCF, will preside over the 88th annual convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in San Antonio, August 10-13. Shaver is AEJMC President for the 2004-05 academic year.
Maria Cristina Santana, journalism professor at UCF's Nicholson School, is head of the Minorities and Communication Division of AEJMC this year. The Division will sponsor convention panels on research, professional freedom and responsibility, and teaching, including sessions such as "Cultural Disparities Beyond the Classroom" and "Ethnic/Minority Media and American Society."
Frank Stansberry is leading off an advertising division teaching workshop with a session on ethics.
Several Nicholson School faculty members are presenting papers at the convention including Denise DeLorme, Steve Collins, Fred Fedler, Rick Kenney, Lisa Mills, and Dan Shaver. In addition, Collins is newsletter editor for the Newspaper Division. Dan Shaver is serving on the Task Force for the Future of Ph.D. Education as well as the Task Force for Ethics.
The AEJMC is the largest association for mass communication worldwide with more than 3,000 members. More than 2,000 delegates are expected at the San Antonio meeting. The convention will feature keynote speaker Alejandro Junco de la Vega, well known for his advocacy of freedom of the press in Mexico and owner of Grupa La Reforma which publishes dailies in Mexico's three largest cities. His work has also opened greater access to the electronic information industry in Mexico.
