Statement of Guidelines For Scholarship
The James E. Fullerton Biology Scholarship is derived from the generous
donation of Mrs. Helen Fullerton in honor of her late son, James E.
Fullerton, the brother of Stuart Fullerton. The purpose of the scholarship
is to encourage the academic study of insects and other terrestrial
arthropods in the natural ecosystems of Florida. It is the intent of the
donors to support studies which primarily emphasize field ecology and
taxonomy, as opposed to more laboratory oriented areas such as genetics and
physiology.
I. Scholarship
- The James E. Fullerton Biology Scholarships are awarded to qualified
undergraduate and graduate students. Normally, only students who have
completed their junior year at the time of application will be considered.
- Students must be enrolled in a degree program in the Department of
Biology at U.C.F.
- The research project must be conducted in the State of Florida.
- The student must work on the project under the direction of a faculty
member in the Department of Biology.
- The student's sponsoring professor will be responsible for the overall
supervision of the research and for the submission of the student's final
report on his or her research.
- The work will be conducted under an independent study or independent
research rubric and the work may occur during any semester. A completed
independent study form must be forwarded with the original application.
- The scholarship will normally be awarded to the same recipient for no
more than two semesters.
II. Stipend
- The stipend for each semester's scholarship will vary according to
revenue generated by the scholarship fund but is expected to average about
$500 per semester.
III. Administrative Procedures
- Applications for the scholarship will be reviewed by the Graduate
Committee, Department of Biology. Awards will be made no later than the
first day of classes for the semester during which the proposed research
will be conducted.
- Applications must be received by the Chair of the Graduate Committee no
later than one month prior to the beginning of classes during the semester
for
which the award is being requested.
- Applications must include the following:
- Letter of Recommendation from one individual other than the faculty
sponsor.
- Transcript of applicant.
- A proposal of not more than 3 typed pages to include literature cited.
- Completed independent study form.
- The Department of Biology requires that a final report be prepared by
the student. This should be in the general form of a research paper,
consisting of a brief introduction, methods, results, and discussion.
Enough data should be included to document the findings, but the report
should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages.
- Reports must be submitted to the chair of the Graduate Committee no
later than the last day that grades may be submitted for the semester that
funding was provided. Failure to meet this deadline will automatically
disqualify the student for future awards.
- If, in the opinion of the Graduate Committee, a qualified applicant does
not apply during a given semester, the award will not be made. In that
event, the unused funds will be used to increase the principal amount of the
scholarship fund.
