The University of Central Florida has come a long way since its inception in 1963. Originally Florida Technological University, the name changed to UCF in 1978 to reflect the mission of what is now a thriving, multi-campus university, with 39,000 students. Almost 7,000 students are enrolled in our 92 graduate degree programs and 69 graduate certificate programs. In addition to its physical growth, UCF has become a prominent player in graduate education nationwide, offering innovative corporate partnerships, world-renowned faculty, and cutting-edge research.

As one of the fastest growing metropolitan research universities in the country—located in one of the most dynamic metropolitan areas in the United States—Orlando, Florida, UCF ranks third among Florida's state universities in total enrollment and fourth in graduate enrollment. Total enrollment is expected to reach 48,000 by 2010.

The university's presently assigned role within the eleven-campus State University System of Florida is that of a general purpose institution offering degree programs at all levels of instruction. In addition, the university has the responsibility of assisting in the economic development of the central Florida region, especially in the areas of high technology, electronics, and tourism.
